This historical fiction story is based on the author's friendship with Richard
Van de Geer, the last man to die in Vietnam. Richard and he flew choppers
together for the Army in Korea in 1969. Richard later transferred to the Air
Force to fly CH-53 helicopters. He was killed on Koh Tang Island during the
ill-fated rescue of the crew of the SS Mayaguez from the Khmer Rouge in
May of 1975. The author did not learn of his fate until the dedication of the
Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in 1982 when the announcer made an issue of
the ordering of the names on the wall, '... to the last man, Lt. Richard Van de
Geer, shot down during the Fall of Saigon.' It has taken many years to
determine the truth, and while told as a speculative ghost story, much of that
truth has found its way onto the pages of this novel, not the least of which is
the abysmal and deceitful role of the Ford Administration.
